How to choose the right flowers for your partner this Valentine’s Day

Choosing the perfect bouquet for your partner can be difficult, especially if you haven’t bought flowers for them before or have moved away from your usual florist. We have put together a list of our best tips for choosing the right flower bouquet for your partner this Valentines Day to ease your struggle.

Choose a bouquet that reflects your relationship

Different bouquets can have different meanings, as can different flowers. Gift your partner flowers that reflect them and your relationship by choosing a bouquet on their meaning. If you would like to gift your partner roses this Valentines Day, take a look our previous blog here which explains the different meanings behind the colour of roses. If your partner isn’t into traditions and would like to mix it up however, visit our blog here, which shows you the most popular flowers for Valentines Day that aren’t all roses.

Make sure they’re fresh

You wouldn’t buy someone out of date chocolates, so why would you buy them past-their-best flowers? Make sure your flowers are fresh by either choosing a high-street florist where you can see and feel the quality of the product before you buy it or if you are buying online, try to order a bouquet before as a gift or for your own home to make sure the quality is up to standard.

Don’t buy them last minute

Avoid a stressful last-minute run to the petrol station for the last bunch of wilting flowers they have by ordering your flowers early. Although we recommend getting your flowers the day before Valentines Day, sometimes you can’t make it and we will still be fully stocked on the 14th February itself, however, if you can then order your flowers in advance. We offer a pre-planned gift service for our customers where they can order all their gifts in advance for the year and we will deliver them to the addresses you would like on the dates you like. We also offer discounts for purchasing multiple bouquets so it’s even easier to organise gifts for Valentines Day, Mother’s Day, Easter, birthdays, Christmas and more all in one place.

If in doubt choose classic red roses

If you have read our Valentines Day flower guides and still are unsure about which flowers to choose, classic red roses are always a winner on Valentines Day and never go out of style. Pop into our Urmston or Knutsford shops to see our range of red Naomi Roses which always go down a treat and have one of our florists make up a bespoke bunch for you or choose our Ruby designer bouquet online which is perfect to convey classic romance and never fails to impress.

Choose sustainability

Whether your other-half is eco-conscious or not, it does feel good to give a sustainable gift and know that you can treat your partner while saving the environment. Choose florists who use entirely recyclable and biodegradable packaging so that you know your act of kindness won’t have an unkind cost to the earth. At Ixia, we only use recyclable packaging and biodegradable cardboard and paper so that you can be sure your gift doesn’t have any hidden costs.

Look after them before you gift

Now that you have chosen your Valentines bouquet for your partner, make sure you look after them before gifting them, especially if you buy them a few days before. For a full guide on how to look after your flowers, you can take a look at our ultimate flower care guide here but by following these basic steps your flowers should thrive.

  1. Before putting them in a vase make sure to clean out the vase properly with bleach to ensure the stems don’t take up bacteria which would shorten their vase life.
  2. Fill the vase about two thirds up with room temperature water and give it five minutes to settle so that the vase no longer has any air bubbles in which the stems could take in to stop them taking in as much water.
  3. Put the flowers in the water making sure that there aren’t any leaves below water level which could spread bacteria into the water. If there are leaves in the water simply lift the bouquet out of the water and peel off the leaves then put the bouquet back into the water.

At Ixia, we get fresh flower deliveries daily and pride ourselves on only stocking the freshest flowers, pop into our Urmston or Knutsford stores to see for yourself where our talented florists can make up a bespoke bouquet for you.
